Moving Day Checklist: What to Do Before and After You Move In
Share:

Have you ever looked around your home on moving day and thought, “Where do I even start?” Boxes everywhere, things to pack, phone calls to make,  it can really be frustrating. Moving into a new place is exciting, but without a plan, it can quickly turn stressful. That’s why having a moving day checklist is so important. It helps you stay organised, save time, and make your move as smooth as possible.

Before you move:

1. Declutter and Sort Your Belongings
Before you start packing, go through your things and separate what you truly need from what you don’t. Donate, sell, or throw away items you no longer use. Fewer items mean less stress and fewer boxes to move.

2. Get Packing Supplies
Stock up on sturdy boxes, tape, markers, bubble wrap, and labels. It’s better to have extra materials than to run out halfway through packing.

3. Label Everything
Write clearly on each box, mention what’s inside and which room it belongs to. For example you can label a box as “Kitchen – Plates & Cups.” This makes unpacking much easier later.

4. Pack an Essentials Box
Prepare a box of items you’ll need right away, like toiletries, a few dishes, snacks, a change of clothes, phone chargers, and important documents. Keep it with you, not in the moving truck.

On Moving Day:

1. Double-Check Every Room
Walk through your old home before leaving. Open every cupboard, drawer, and shelf to make sure nothing’s left behind.

2. Take Photos of the Property (If Rented)
If you’re renting, take clear photos of your old home’s condition before handing in the keys. Do the same at your new place before unpacking; it protects you from disputes later.

3. Supervise the Movers
Keep an eye on how your boxes are handled and where they’re placed in your new home. It’s easier to guide movers now than to drag boxes around later.

After You Move In:

1. Unpack Smartly
Start with essentials: kitchen items, toiletries, and bedding. Then go room by room so things don’t get too messy.

2. Clean Before Settling
Even if your new home looks tidy, give it a quick clean. Wipe down shelves, mop floors, and clean the bathroom and kitchen before arranging your things.

3. Check Utilities and Appliances
Test the lights, taps, gas, and sockets. Make sure everything works. If you notice problems, report them immediately.

4. Meet Your Neighbours
Introduce yourself. A friendly wave or short chat can go a long way in building a good relationship. You might even discover useful local tips,  like the best shops or repair services nearby.

5. Explore and Enjoy Your New Area
Take a walk around your new neighbourhood. Visit nearby parks, markets, or restaurants. Familiarity helps your new place feel like home faster.
