Fake agents are one of the most common problems in the rental space, and they are getting harder to identify because they no longer look obvious.
They sound confident. They respond quickly. They even show nice pictures.
But small details usually give them away.
One major warning sign is pressure. If someone is rushing you to pay before proper inspection, that’s a red flag. Legit agents are usually open to physical viewing before payment.
Another sign is vague information. If they avoid direct questions about ownership, documents, or location details, you should be cautious.
Also watch how they communicate. Too many excuses, inconsistent answers, or refusal to meet in person are all signs something may not be right.
A genuine agent will not be uncomfortable with verification. In fact, they expect it.
The safest approach is to always verify before sending money, no matter how good the deal looks.
Because once money leaves your hand too early, recovery is often difficult.
