What to Do If Your Landlord Refuses to Fix Issues in Nigeria
One of the most frustrating parts of renting is when something in the house breaks… and nothing is done about it.
Maybe it’s water issues. Maybe it’s electricity problems. Maybe it’s something structural that keeps getting worse. You report it once, then twice, and still nothing changes.
At that point, it’s easy to feel stuck.
The first thing to do is communicate clearly and calmly again, but this time, in writing if possible. Written messages help keep a record of your request and avoid misunderstandings.
If that doesn’t work, try escalating politely. This could mean involving a neutral third party, like a mutual contact or estate manager, depending on the situation.
It’s also important to check your agreement. Some responsibilities are clearly defined in the tenancy terms, and knowing where you stand helps you respond better.
In situations where nothing changes, documenting everything becomes important. Dates, messages, and photos can help if the issue needs to be addressed formally.
The goal is not to create conflict, but to ensure your living conditions are safe and manageable.
Ignoring the issue rarely makes it better. But handling it calmly and strategically gives you a better chance of resolution.
