House hunting in Lagos is not for the weak. It is an extreme sport disguised as a basic human need. You start with hope, a budget, and sometimes screenshots of the type of house you really want. But by the third inspection, you are already tired.
The first shock usually comes from pricing. The house you saw online for a reasonable amount suddenly increases when you arrive for inspection. You are told things like “The price just went up this morning” or “Another person is already interested.” This is where many tenants learn their first Lagos lesson. Nothing is final until keys are in your hand.
Then there are agents. Some are professional and helpful. Others are motivational speakers who show you houses that look nothing like what you asked for. You say two bedrooms. They show you one bedroom and confidence. You say budget is fixed. They tell you to “stretch small.” 😁
Inspection day is another adventure. What looks fine in photos may come with surprises like poor drainage, noisy neighbours, water issues, or a compound that floods when it rains. This is why smart tenants inspect with their eyes wide open. Check water flow. Test sockets. Ask questions even if they sound uncomfortable. These little acts saves regret later.
Documentation is where many people rush. Agreements are skimmed because everyone just wants to move in. This is a mistake. Read what you are signing. Ask about repairs, notice periods, rent increases, and service charges. If something is unclear, ask. A clear agreement protects both tenant and landlord.
Lagos house hunting rewards patience and preparation. It is stressful, yes, but the right house does exist. You just have to survive long enough to find it.
